The President's Award
The President's Award – Empowering Young Potential

The President’s Award for Youth Empowerment is a prestigious international youth development program that challenges young people between the ages of 14 and 24 to become their best selves—mentally, physically, emotionally, and socially. Founded in 1956 by Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and adapted globally, it operates under different names across countries. In South Africa, it’s known as The President’s Award.
The program is non-competitive and allows participants to design their own journey across four key areas:
Voluntary Service – Giving back to the community
Skills – Developing a personal interest or talent
Physical Recreation – Improving health and fitness
Adventurous Journey – Exploring the outdoors, often through hiking and teamwork
There is also a Residential Project at the Gold Level, where participants undertake a shared purposeful experience away from home.
Why It Matters
The award cultivates resilience, leadership, compassion, and goal-setting. It’s a recognised badge of honour for future universities, employers, and life in general—showing not just what you’ve done, but who you’re becoming.
